Nicolas Saunier has an engineering degree and a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in computer science from Télécom Paris (2005). He worked for four years at the French national research institute on transport and safety (then IFSTTAR and now part of the Gustave Eiffel University) for his doctorate, then for four years as postdoctoral fellow and research associate at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of British Columbia (UBC) with Prof. Tarek Sayed. He has spent a four-month sabbatical in 2015 in the Road and Transport Department of Lund University. He has been hired in 2009 at the Civil, Geological and Mining Engineering Department of Polytechnique Montréal and is currently a full professor in Transportation Engineering. Specialized in artificial intelligence, his interests include intelligent and active transportation, road safety, and data science for transportation.
His research has been funded by public and private sources, prominently the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Québec Fund for Research on Nature and Technology (FRQNT), the Institute for Data Valorization (IVADO), Transport Québec (MTQ), Transport Canada, the City of Montréal and WSP Canada.
He is a member of IVADO, of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre on the Implementation of Sustainable Development (CIRODD) and of the Interuniversity Research Centre on Enterprise Networks, Logistics and Transportation (CIRRELT) of which he co-heads the ITS lab. He is a member of the executive committees of CIRRELT and the Quebec Research Network on Road Safety (RRSR). He was a member of three Transportation Research Board (TRB) committees: Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing Applications (ABJ70) (2011-2017), Committee on Safety Data, Analysis, and Evaluation (ANB20-ACS20) (2011-2022) and Pedestrian Committee (ANF10) (2011-2020).

Il a travaillé pendant quatre ans à l'Institut National de Recherche sur les Transports et la Sécurité (INRETS, devenu IFSTTAR et maintenant partie de l'Université Gustave Eiffel) pour son doctorat, puis quatre ans au département de génie civil de l'Université de la Colombie Britannique (UBC) avec Professeur Tarek Sayed. Il a effectué un séjour sabbatique de quatre mois en 2015 au département Routes et Transport de l'Université de Lund. Il a été recruté en 2009 au département des Génies civil, géologique et des mines de Polytechnique Montréal, où il est actuellement professeur titulaire en génie des transports. Spécialisé en intelligence artificielle, ses centres d'intérêts sont les transports actifs et intelligents, la sécurité routière et la science des données pour le transport.
Sa recherche a été financée par des sources publiques et privées, en particulier le Conseil de recherche en sciences naturelles et génie (CRSNG), le fonds de recherche Québécois - Nature et Technologies (FRQNT), l'Institut de Valorisation des Données (IVADO), Transport Québec (MTQ), Transport Canada, la Ville de Montréal et WSP Canada.
Il est membre de l'IVADO, du Centre interdisciplinaire de recherche en opérationnalisation du développement durable (CIRODD) et du Centre Interuniversitaire de Recherche sur les Réseaux d'Entreprise, la Logistique et le Transport (CIRRELT), et co-dirige son laboratoire des systèmes de transport intelligents (STI). Il est membre des comités exécutifs du CIRRELT et du Réseau de Recherche en Sécurité Routière (RRSR). Il a été membre de trois comité du Transportation Research Board (TRB): applications de l'intelligence artificielle et de l'informatique avancée (ABJ70) (2011-2017), évaluation, analyse et données de sécurité (ANB20-ACS20) (2011-2022) et piétons (ANF10) (2011-2020).
